Hamburg lies on the southern end of the Jutland Peninsula, with Continental Europe to its south, Scandinavia to its north, the North Sea to its west, and the Baltic Sea to its east. Its perfect location, where the rivers Alster and Bille join the river Alster and then flow into the North Sea, gave and give Hamburg its important position as overseas and regional harbour. The inner city region spreads out around the Binnenalster ("Inner Alster") and the Außenalster ("Outer Alster") formerly parts of the river Alster but nowadays retained as lakes. The Hamburg area also counts with the island of Neuwerk and two other islands in the North Sea, which lie within in the Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park.
The Hamburg harbour area and the surrounding regions are world known for its boat building facilities, repair and service firms and shipyards. Some of the worlds largest and most luxurious cruise ships and yachts are built, updated or repaired in and around Hamburg.
